Bringing the Majesty of Birds of Prey to Life at Tamborine Mountain College

There are few moments more powerful in education than standing face to face with nature.

On Friday 14 August, Tamborine Mountain College, working in partnership with BirdLife Australia, and proudly supported by the
Queensland Government—Engaging Science Grants, students will experience an unforgettable wildlife encounter as the College welcomes renowned raptor educator Mark Culleton and his incredible birds of prey for a special hands on learning experience.

From 9:00 am until approximately 11:00 am, students will have the unique opportunity to observe these remarkable birds up close while discovering the fascinating world of Australia's raptors, their adaptations, behaviours, hunting techniques and important role within our ecosystems.

This immersive experience, titled "Wings of Wonder: A Flight into the World of Raptors" will take science beyond the pages of a textbook and into a living, breathing environment where curiosity, awe and discovery take flight.

Meeting the Masters of the Sky

Raptors are some of the most remarkable animals on Earth.

With their incredible eyesight, powerful talons, aerodynamic bodies and specialised hunting abilities, birds of prey are perfectly adapted predators that play a vital role in maintaining the balance of our natural environments.

Through Mark's expert knowledge and storytelling, students will learn about the unique features that make raptors such successful hunters and gain a deeper understanding of the important ecological role these birds play.

Students will explore questions such as:

• How can a bird spot prey from incredible distances?

• Why are talons and beaks shaped differently across species?

• How do raptors contribute to healthy ecosystems?

• What challenges do birds of prey face in the modern environment?

• How can communities help protect these magnificent creatures?

By observing these birds up close, students will be able to connect classroom learning with real-world science in a way that is memorable, meaningful and inspiring.

Science You Can See, Hear and Experience

At Tamborine Mountain College, we believe authentic learning happens when students are given opportunities to engage with the natural world.

This experience provides students with the chance to practise scientific observation skills as they examine the physical characteristics, behaviours and adaptations of different raptor species.

Rather than simply learning that birds have feathers, wings and beaks, students will see firsthand how these features have evolved to help each species survive.

They will observe:

• The incredible structure of raptor wings and feathers

• The strength and precision of talons

• The specialised features that make each species unique

• The behaviours that help birds hunt and thrive

• The connection between predators and healthy ecosystems

Connecting Conservation, Community and Curiosity

The visit from Mark Culleton forms part of Tamborine Mountain College's ongoing commitment to environmental education, STEM learning and conservation awareness.

Through the College's successful Queensland Engaging Science Grant, the "TMC Powerful Owl Showcase: Engaging Science and Eco-tourism in our Community", proudly supported by the Queensland Government—Engaging Science Grants project is creating opportunities for students to connect with scientists, environmental educators and conservation experts.

The project aims to inspire a deeper understanding of the incredible biodiversity that surrounds our College community and empower students to become passionate advocates for protecting the natural world.

The raptor experience complements the College's broader Powerful Owl conservation initiatives, including scientific monitoring, biodiversity investigations and community engagement activities.

Together, these experiences demonstrate that science is not just something students study—it is something they can see, touch, question and be inspired by.

A close encounter with a bird of prey has the power to leave a lasting impression.
