National Science Week Pub Trivia

Are you a pub trivia punter, or think quiz nights are a quintessential part of your life? You’ve come to the right place!

In 2026, National Science Week is trialling a national pub trivia campaign.

Pub trivia companies around the country are encouraged to register to hold a special National Science Week round (or 3...) in their weekly sessions during August. We’ve developed a suite of questions you can use, ranging from science-at-the-movies, to Aussie science innovations, to adults-only trivia. Who could resist learning about southern right whales and their one-tonne testicles?

If you choose to ‘Register a Public Pub Trivia Event’, we’ll send you a link to our question bank FOR FREE and your trivia night will be listed as a public event on our National Science Week website, so more people will hear about it.

National Science Week runs from 15-23 August 2026. You may wish to use these questions during Science Week, or any time in August. We’ve developed 4 rounds of 10 questions, so you could run one round every week in August!

If you’d like to use the trivia at your workplace, or with your friends and family in a private capacity, you can choose to ‘Register for a Private Pub Trivia Event’ and we’ll send you a link to a different question bank of 3 rounds of 10 questions (so no sneaky studying-up to win a bar voucher!).

Please keep in mind these questions are designed for adults and are written in a pub-trivia style. They are generally light-hearted in nature and designed to appeal to people with a wide range of interests.

If you’d like even more trivia, you can also sign up for a Brain Break. Brain Breaks are a great way to celebrate Science Week in your school or workplace, and include trivia rounds for both children and adults.

We’d love to hear how you find using these questions! Feel free to share your experience with scienceweek@questacon.edu.au. Feel free to tag us on social media or use #ScienceWeek and share photos of your events.

FAQ’s

Do I need to register my company, or individual venues?

You’ll need to register for each individual trivia night (venue and time), so they will be searchable on the National Science Week website. We encourage individual hosts to register their own venues. If you have a large number of venues to register, reach out to us at scienceweek@questacon.edu.au and we can explore how to do a bulk round of registrations.

It looks like members of the public can register for pub trivia too... does that mean they’ll be able to study-up and cheat?

No! We are offering a set of ‘pub trivia’ style questions that people can use at home, but these are a different set of questions to those that we are offering trivia companies.

Where do the questions come from?

The questions were developed by staff at Questacon – the National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra. Questacon staff are passionate about science, and science communication... and many of them are pub-trivia regulars themselves! All the questions have been fact-checked and include references if you’d like to find more information.

Do I need to use all your questions?

Absolutely not! Feel free to use this question bank in whatever way suits you best... you could use just one round or pick and choose your favourite questions from the list. You might want to add in some extra questions about science in your local area.

What should I do if someone questions or challenges an answer?

We've cited sources for all our questions, so people can see where they've come from.

Why does National Science Week want to get involved in pub trivia?

National Science Week reaches around 3 million Australians each year, across 2,500+ events, but we are always keen to engage with new audiences! We are especially keen to raise awareness about Science Week with people who might not normally think to attend an event about science, but who are curious about the world around them... like pub trivia goers. We hope that when you share these questions, you can mention that Science Week is coming up (or happening) and encourage people to look out for other events that are on nearby.

What's in it for me, as a trivia-company or venue?

Your trivia night will receive free cross-promotion on the National Science Week website, you'll receive access to free, engaging content, and you'll get to be part of Australia's largest science festival which offer the opportunity to connect with a broad and diverse audience- win, win, win!
