🌿 Come together to learn, share knowledge and care for Country at Seeds of Life: Growing Science, Food and Knowledge in Woorabinda. 🌱🤎

This free, hands-on National Science Week event will bring students, families, Elders, schools and community members together at Woorabinda State School. The day will respectfully bring together Western plant science and cultural knowledge shared under the guidance and cultural authority of Elders and knowledge holders.

Students will discover the story of plant evolution—from algae and mosses to ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants. They will explore how plants grow from seeds, develop flowers and fruits, produce new seeds and begin the cycle of life again. 🌿🌼🍎

Hands-on activities will include native plant identification, microscope observations and learning how scientists collect and prepare plant samples for a herbarium. Students will also learn how to grow food, compost food scraps and return nutrients to the soil. 🔬🌱🍂

Elders will share knowledge about the strong connections between plants, people, culture and Country. Cultural knowledge will be shared respectfully and only with the permission of the appropriate knowledge holders.

Together, participants will take part in Caring for Country activities by planting native species at the school, including 10 Gumbi Gumbi plants provided by Uncle Steven Kemp. These plants will create habitat, support biodiversity and help keep Country healthy and strong. 🌳🦋

Capricorn Conservation Council will provide the plants, activity materials and scientific equipment. Microscopes, plants and science resources will also be donated to support ongoing learning for Woorabinda students.
