Celebrating curiosity, culture, and our coastal environment

Kalbarri District High School will be hosting a week-long celebration of science, engaging students from Kindergarten to Year 10 in a series of fun, hands-on learning experiences across the school.

Throughout the week, each class will take part in our “Seeds of Knowledge: Grass Head Scientist Grow-Off”. Every class will be supplied with materials—including grass seeds—to design and grow their very own “scientist” grass head. Students will give their creation a scientific name, decorate it (think lab coats, safety goggles, and creative features), and care for it as it grows. Grass heads will be trimmed and styled over the week, with all entries displayed and judged on the final Friday of Science Week.

In addition to the grow-off, students will participate in two engaging lunchtime events:

  • Two-Way Science: Soap Making Workshop
Students will explore the science of soap-making while learning about traditional cleansing practices used by First Nations peoples, highlighting the connection between cultural knowledge and modern science.

  • Two-Way Science: Bush Tucker and Bush Medicine Garden
Students will contribute to our school garden by planting and learning about bush tucker and bush medicine plants used by the Nhanda (Nanda) people. This activity will deepen understanding of local Indigenous knowledge and sustainable use of native plants.
  • Seagrass Investigation Session
Students will investigate the importance of seagrass ecosystems in our local marine environment. We aim to host a guest speaker or expert who can share insights into seagrass life cycles and how we can observe and protect these vital habitats.

In addition, our Bushrangers students will take on leadership roles, sharing the importance of Caring for Country. They will lead discussions and activities focused on local conservation, flora and fauna, and sustainability practices. Students will also be involved in building practical supports for wildlife, including bee sanctuaries, frog hotels, and bird feeders/houses, helping local ecosystems to thrive.

This week of activities is designed to foster curiosity, creativity, and connection to Country, while promoting scientific thinking and environmental stewardship among our students.
