Re-generation Brains – Discussing regenerative medicine in brains with Dr Kiara Bruggeman

  • - (AEST)
  • ANU Birch Building (room 1.08/1.09)
35 Science Rd., Acton, ACT 2601, Australia

You’ve heard it said that brain cells can’t heal, but that’s not the whole story. After all, you built your brain once, so why can’t you do it again?

Join Dr Kiara Bruggeman for an exciting seminar covering nanomaterials that are being developed for regenerative medicine in brains. Regenerative medicine, or tissue engineering, is a branch of medicine focused on creating a nanoscale environment that mimics the infrastructure of healthy tissues and provides all the right biochemical cues to encourage the generation of new healthy tissue to replace damaged or lost tissue. The event will include a research talk with some sample brain-mimicking nanomaterials, and electron microscope imagery of their nanoscale structure.

Dr Kiara Bruggeman is a biomedical and nanotechnology engineer at ANU who works on making materials that mimic the environment and structure of healthy brain tissue at a nanoscale - using these materials in combination with stem cells to promote functional recovery with new brain tissue after stroke, traumatic brain injury, or neurodegenerative disease.
