What if a tiny seed could teach us about science, sustainability, and the power of community?
During Science Week 2026, students will become scientists, gardeners, and community leaders through our exciting project, "Seeds of Science: Growing STEM through Community and Sustainability." This hands-on program will inspire students to explore how plants grow, why they are important for our environment, and how science can help create a more sustainable future.
To launch the week, students may be invited to dress up as a scientist, sparking curiosity and excitement about STEM. Throughout the week, lunchtime activities will give students the chance to learn through doing. They will enjoy science-themed colouring activities, plant seeds in cups, investigate what plants need to survive, and observe the stages of seed growth. Students will also learn about sustainability and how growing plants can help support healthy ecosystems.
A special focus of the project will be expanding our Seed of Life Garden. Students will learn how to propagate and multiply plants, helping to create a thriving garden that can continue to grow long after Science Week has ended. Through this process, they will develop scientific observation skills, understand plant life cycles, and discover practical ways to care for the environment.
The project will extend beyond our school community. Students will share their learning, plants, and enthusiasm with residents at Bundoora Extended Care, creating meaningful connections across generations. Together, students and residents will celebrate the joy of growing plants and learning about science, while building a stronger sense of community. We will have our friendly partners from the Darebin Creek Management Committee to help us. Not forgetting our College Leaders too.
By combining STEM, sustainability, and community engagement, "Seeds of Science" will show students that even the smallest seed can grow into something amazing.
