Seeds of Science Week Workshops will be led and facilitated by Scientific Researcher, community member and long-standing MGESS parent Melanie Young with support from teaching staff and student leaders (for younger classes). The workshops will run for one whole school day, involving all students from Prep to Year 6 participating in an engaging and hands-on science 1-hour workshop in our school hall consisting of experiment stations and displays. All students will begin their workshop by participating in a large group demonstration of the Balloon Rocket experiment with two student volunteers. Lower primary students will also engage in the chemical sciences experiments including coloured milk experiment and vinegar and baking soda balloon experiment. They will then create and investigate cup telephones. In keeping with the Seeds of Science theme, all students will explore the biological sciences using a stereo microscope to observe the parts of plants linking to the life cycle of plants. Upper primary students will extract DNA from bananas and use a compound microscope and slide to observe the different microscopic features and functions of leaves. As part of their workshop, upper primary students will have the opportunity to learn about Melanie’s STEM career and journey.
