Maarakool Primary School, Brabham, WA 6055, Australia

The 2026 National Science Week theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all, celebrates curiosity, discovery, and the growth of knowledge. At Maarakool Primary School, this theme will come to life through Maarakool Minds in Bloom, a whole-school science day taking place on Wednesday 19 August 2026 (Term 3, Week 5).

Our Science Week event has been thoughtfully designed to connect science, literacy, inquiry, and creativity. Books and literature will provide the inspiration for exploration, with our Library Officer creating a Sensational Science display in the library featuring engaging fiction and non-fiction texts.

All 348 students across 17 classes, from Kindergarten to Year 6, will participate in this immersive science experience. Each classroom, known as a Greenhouse, will receive a Curiosity Crate filled with all the Seed Supplies (materials) needed for their hands-on investigations. Teachers, our Head Gardeners, will guide students through carefully designed Seeds — engaging inquiry-based science activities supported by PowerPoints, quality literature, videos, and discussion prompts known as Sunlight  with strong cross-curricular connections and real world applications.

Throughout the morning, students will explore scientific concepts through books, videos, and rich classroom discussion before being introduced to their collaborative science challenge. Working in small groups, students will plan, predict, test ideas, and problem-solve using inquiry thinking skills and scientific knowledge. Activities have been selected from across all strands of the science curriculum and are designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and a passion for science in everyday life.

In the afternoon, students will finalise and display their creations within their Greenhouses before contributing a personal reflection to the Maarakool Tree of Knowledge in the library. Each student will complete a Leaf of Learning, creating a collaborative installation of 348 leaves representing the growth of scientific understanding across the school community.

To conclude the celebration, students and families will be invited to participate in The Big Bloom — a whole-school learning showcase where classes will journey through the Greenhouses to explore, celebrate, and share each other’s scientific discoveries. Families will be welcomed into the school community to experience the creativity, inquiry, and wonder that has flourished throughout Maarakool Minds in Bloom.
