Following our TSTS award-winning project of building bird nesting boxes for our school, we are transforming a retired tree stump into a permanent 'Habitat Hub.' This project will launch during National Science Week with a school-wide Grand Opening and the installation of 1-2 high-definition cameras inside the hides. All students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will become 'Citizen Scientists.'
The camera/s will provide a live window into the hidden lives of Tasmanian birdlife, accessible via classroom screens.
Kindergarten to Year 2 students will focus on identifying species and life cycles through observational drawing.
Years 3 to 6 will engage in data collection, monitoring visitation patterns, and analysing how urban school environments can support biodiversity.
This initiative moves STEM from a one-off construction task to a long-term ecological study. It fosters a deep connection to local wildlife while developing skills in digital technology, biological observation, and data analysis.
The 'Habitat Hub' will serve as a permanent outdoor laboratory, ensuring Science Week sparks a year-round interest in environmental stewardship and scientific inquiry.
