In a world of AI summaries and digital hype cycles, one website stands out as a bastion of well sourced knowledge and easily navigated tables of content: Wikipedia.

Wikipedia isn’t perfect though.

Just like our other knowledge systems, Wikipedia has historically struggled to represent the lives and accomplishments of the countless scientists with marginalised gender identities (such as women, transgender, and intersex people) whose contributions to science have been so vital for creating the world we live in today.

However, you can help fix this! On Wikipedia, anyone can make a change! Literally. Anyone can make edits and updates to existing Wikipedia pages or even make entirely new pages from scratch!

Together with members from WikiMedia Australia and local expert wiki-editors, join us learn how to create a Wikipedia contributor account, find accurate sources, and use Wikipedia editor tools.

Together, we can all help push back against the underrepresentation of women and gender diverse scientists in the world’s largest encyclopedia and celebrate their amazing contributions to science and society.

By participating in this event you'll have the opportunity to

  • Create a Wikipedia contributor profile
  • Learn how to navigate the Wikipedia editor tools
  • Hear from members of the Australian WikiMedia team; including local expert editors
  • Help update and create articles from a prepared list of STEMM researchers with marginalised gender identities
  • Work with other local community members passionate about improving STEMM representation online

This event is sponsored by the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at the Australian National University and with support from their Inclusive Science Communication Collective. Additional support and guest facilitators provided through the generous volunteers at WikiMedia Australia.
