Gut Microbiome National Science Week Event

  • - (AEST)
  • St George Hospital Acute Services Building Atrium
1 South Street, Kogarah, NSW 2217, Australia

Come along to explore the Gut Feelings exhibition, learn more about gut health from researchers from the Microbiome Research Centre, and get creative with fun, hands-on microbiome crafts led by Gut Feelings artists.

Gut Feelings is a community art project that brings together science and art to explore the vital connection between the brain, the gut, the brain, and the trillions of microbes that make up our gut microbiome. The project aims to raise awareness of the importance of gut health to mental health and wellbeing, and to promote community connection. The exhibition centrepiece, a giant soft sculpture gut filled with knitted villi, and other larger than life artworks transform complex internal systems into approachable, playful, and evocative art. Individual artworks are also featured in the exhibition, including an intricate life-size crochet silhouette of the body showing the gut and brain connected by the vagus nerve, a crochet version of the Bristol Stool Chart, and artistic responses to gut related scientific images.

The exhibition was first exhibited at Hazelhurst Arts Centre in August 2025. It is currently on display in St George Hospital through July and August 2026. The activity day described occurs on August 20 only.

Gut Feelings Community Art Project is supported by Inspiring Australia NSW as a National Science Week Project. The artists acknowledge the many community volunteers and members of the science community who helped bring this big woolly project to life.
