Join Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch for a guided platypus walk at Namarag Nature Reserve, along the beautiful Molonglo River. This is a relaxed and easy outdoor activity, perfect for families, beginners, and anyone who enjoys spending time in nature.
On this walk, you will explore a section of the Molonglo River and learn how to spot one of Australia’s most unique animals—the platypus. Platypus are shy and quiet, so they can be hard to see. But with help from our friendly Waterwatch guides, you will learn what signs to look for and have a good chance of spotting one swimming or diving for food.
As we walk together, we will share simple tips to help you notice platypus activity. You might see small ripples on the water, a V-shaped wake moving across the surface, or bubbles rising where a platypus is feeding. We will also talk about rakali (water rats), another special animal that lives in our waterways and is often seen along the riverbanks.
This walk is not just about spotting wildlife. You will also learn why platypus are important for healthy rivers. Platypus are top predators, which means they play an important role in keeping the river ecosystem balanced. By watching where they live and how active they are, we can learn about the health of our waterways.
Our guides will also explain how community members across the Upper Murrumbidgee region help collect platypus data each year during Platypus Month. This is called citizen science, and it helps scientists and land managers understand how platypus populations are changing over time.
The walk is easy-paced, with plenty of stops to look, listen, and ask questions. It’s a great way to slow down and connect with nature.
