Governor General’s Design Challenge 2026

  • - (AEST)

Meet the Governor General, explore how seeds move, and design your own wind-dispersed seeds from your classroom with this free webinar.

Look to nature for inspiration and explore how seeds travel away from their parent plants and examine the different plant structures that help them. Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC will be live in the Questacon studio to challenge you to practice designing, making, testing and observing to make your very own prototype seed carriers!

This live and interactive webinar is aimed at classrooms in years 3 to 6. Participants outside this age range are welcome, but younger participants might need a little more support to engage with the activities. We’ll guide participants through experiments using simple materials, while collecting their hypotheses and ideas through interactive polls and Q&A functions.

Teachers will have access to a resource guide that outlines the key concepts covered in the webinar, as well as some simple activities which can be completed live during the webinar and extended at a later date to support existing lesson plans.

To get the most out of this event you'll need:

  • At least 1 sheet of A4 paper
  • Paperclips
  • Scissors
  • Pen/marker
  • Something to make a breeze. Some ideas are a desk fan, or a piece of cardboard and your arms
  • As much flat surface as possible for testing your designs. The activities will work with a stretch of empty floor, some tables lined up, or outside, so chose what works for your space.
