Craigslea State High School, Chermside West, QLD 4032, Australia

Cultivating Curiosity will be a day-long program involving neighbouring Daycare centres, primary school and local scientists to promote curiosity in science. The event will consist of three different sessions. Session 1: Year 8 Science students will facilitate children from the neighbouring daycare centre introducing them to a series of chemistry experiments involving colour, reactions and slime! The year 8 students will explain to the younger participants what is happening promoting excitement about science. Session 2: Year 11/12 chemistry/biology students will run a series of experiments (colourful chromatography, magic indicators, What's under the microscope, electrochemistry) with year 5/6 students from the neighbouring primary school. Not only will this provide a mentoring experience and an opportunity for the senior students to consolidate their own knowledge, it will allow the primary students engage in science. This may lead to these students studying science when entering high school in the following years. Session 3: Year 7 - 9 students will listen to a range of scientists discuss their careers. Students will rotate through the speakers having the opportunity to listen to the interesting career options that may be available to them and to ask questions about their jobs, research and pathways to engage in these careers.
