Accrete a Planet + Seed Library
Following on from HIC’s 2025 investigation of the Earth and its surrounding neighborhood of planets, the students of Holy Innocents will conduct an analogue experiment to grow a new planet for our Solar System … to replace Pluto after it was kicked out. This process will explore the stages of planet growth, otherwise known as Accretion, though the processes of:
- Space dust condensation
- Coagulation of dust into pebbles
- Accumulation of pebbles into planetesimals, through gravitation
- Accretion through the collision of planetesimals into a proto-planet
- Further growth through events such as asteroid collision - creating the odd impact crater
Whole School Seed Library + Workshops
- Whole school "excursion" to Norway’s seed vault
- Families harvest and donate seeds from various plants in home gardens, and/or fruits and vegetables
- Families can ‘deposit’ their harvested seeds to the library, and ‘withdraw’ seeds to plant at home
- Workshops led by a specialist teacher based on this theme will continue during the week!
