8-Bit Instagram – Image Filters Built From Scratch in Microsoft Excel

  • - (AEST)
  • Birch Building #35
35 Science Road, Acton, ACT 2601, Australia

In this activity, we’ll break down the maths behind image processing, and how maths can “know” things about an image. Image filters use formulas to detect edges and give the outlines of shapes – and so can you. We’ll do a little bit by hand, on paper, doing all the maths (only basic addition and multiplication) manually before moving to excel to test and create different image filters. You'll also get chance to be creative, with prizes for the crowd favourite excel art.

We’ll also talk about how this kind of image processing can be used outside of social media – such as in large scale analysis of satellite images to help manage bushfires in Australia.

We will have some chromebooks available, but please bring your own laptop or chromebook (school chromebooks are fine) for the best experience.
