Join Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch for a guided platypus walk along beautiful Cooma Creek. This is a calm and easy outdoor activity that is perfect for families, beginners, and anyone who loves nature.
On this walk, you will explore a local waterway and learn how to spot one of Australia’s most unique animals—the platypus. Platypus are shy and hard to see, but with help from our friendly Waterwatch guides, you will have a good chance of spotting one moving through the water or diving for food.
As we walk along the creek, we will share simple tips to help you look for signs of platypus activity. You may see ripples in the water, bubbles rising to the surface, or the smooth shape of a platypus swimming. We will also talk about rakali (water rats), another important animal that lives in our waterways.
This walk is not just about spotting animals. You will also learn why platypus are important for healthy rivers and creeks. Platypus are top predators, which means they help keep the ecosystem balanced. By watching them, we can learn about the health of our waterways.
You will hear how local volunteers across the Upper Murrumbidgee region help collect information about platypus every year during Platypus Month. This is called citizen science, and it helps scientists and land managers better understand where platypus live and how they are doing.
The walk is relaxed and easy-paced, with time to stop, look, listen, and ask questions. Our guides will be there to help you learn and enjoy the experience.
