Sounds of Renewal – Acoustic Restoration in Action

  • - (AEST)
  • The Quoin
VM2M+28 Ross TAS, Ross, TAS 7209, Australia

Step inside a world-first experiment in ecological renewal at The Quoin, a living laboratory dedicated to restoring natural ecosystems. This intimate tour reveals how scientists are using sound to restore nature, and how the sounds of nature can indicate the health and recovery of a landscape. Witness the call-broadcasting setup where short sound snippets from healthy ecosystems are played into disturbed areas to accelerate the return of animals, microbes, and plant life. This is where science and nature create a living, breathing symphony of renewal.

Throughout the journey, guests will visit acoustic restoration research sites and various locations of significance across The Quoin. At each stop, our team and researchers will facilitate discussion about the research, conservation, and restoration work underway at these key locations. We also encourage guests to bring along binoculars or cameras, as there will be opportunities for guided birding and nature photography.

The tour includes breaks for walking and lunch, offering a chance for guests to reflect and connect to the dynamic surroundings of The Quoin. Lunch is self-catered, with morning tea supplied by Wedgetail.

Please be aware that this event takes place in a natural outdoor environment. While we aim to make the event as inclusive and accessible as possible, some areas will have uneven terrain, dirt paths, and limited mobility access. Please consider access requirements prior to purchasing tickets.

This event is part of Beaker Street Festival

Smart, surprising, and seriously entertaining: Beaker Street Festival is bringing its signature mix of science, art, and connection back to Lutruwita/Tasmania this August. Beaker Street Festival is Tasmania's annual celebration of science and culture.
