Science in the Swamp is back in Centennial Park this National Science Week — and bigger than ever.

Join us on 16 August 2026 for a FREE day out where Centennial Park transforms into a large-scale, hands-on science experience filled with things to try, test and explore.

With more than 50 stalls, workshops and activity zones, visitors can dive into the fascinating world of science. Try real experiments, get hands-on with microscopes, explore chemistry in action, or take part in citizen science activities tracking wildlife and the health of local ecosystems.

At the centre of the event are the much-loved UNSW SciFest Village and Meet a Scientist space, where researchers from leading universities and organisations step out of the lab and into the park. Ask questions, hear what they are working on, and get a rare, direct insight into the science shaping our world.

There is plenty happening throughout the day — from live liquid nitrogen science shows to interactive demonstrations across chemistry, wildlife, marine science and environmental research. Visitors can get up close to native animals, explore live frog and water bug displays, discover marine habitats and investigate anatomy, fossils and forensic science through hands-on activities. Crowd favourites return, including the life-sized roaming Australoventor Ginger, alongside interactive robotics, virtual reality experiences and science activities that continue to expand each year.

Science in the Swamp is designed to make science accessible to everyone. It is free, outdoors and easy to explore at your own pace — whether you stay for an hour or the full day. Families, young people and curious minds of all ages are invited to take part, ask questions and get involved.
