Operation Posidonia - Walk and talk

1542 Anzac Parade, La Perouse, NSW 2036, Australia

Operation Posidonia and the Gamay Rangers are working together to restore the endangered seagrass Posidonia australis in Gamay - Botany Bay.

Posidonia australis (Strapweed) is a large seagrass that forms dense, vibrant underwater meadows which are an important nursery habitat for many marine species including seahorses, snapper and blue swimmer crabs. Seagrass meadows also play a critical role in producing oxygen, sequestering carbon, improving water quality and stabilising sediments, helping to protect our shorelines from erosion.

Increased development, pollution and boat use has led to major declines in Posidonia over the last few decades, with the meadows being formally listed as endangered in several NSW estuaries, including in Gamay - Botany Bay.

Naturally detached fragments that break away in storms and wash up on beaches can be collected and replanted at restoration sites throughout Gamay-Botany Bay. By rescuing and replanting these fragments into degraded areas we can give these vital seagrass meadows a helping hand on the way to recovery.

Join the Gamay Rangers and marine scientists from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and UNSW Sydney to find out how you can get involved by collecting naturally detached shoots from beaches.
