Microscopic Worlds

  • - (ACST)
  • Ungarra Primary School
15 Schramm Street, UNGARRA, SA 5607, Australia

Get ready to discover a hidden world of tiny life, big discoveries, and hands-on science!

Students from two small remote schools on the Eyre Peninsula will become scientists, explorers, and teachers as they investigate aquatic ecosystems using USB microscopes, water testing kits, and field sampling equipment. From pond water and soil samples to tiny invertebrates, students will uncover organisms and ecosystems usually invisible to the naked eye.

Linked to our Kitchen Garden and Food Ladder hydroponic greenhouse, students will explore how water quality, nutrient cycles, and ecosystem health affect sustainable food production and plant growth. They will test water, collect specimens with aquatic nets, and project microscopic discoveries for others to see.

This event is especially exciting because many of our students have limited access to science labs and specialist equipment. Through this project, they will experience real-world STEM learning usually only available in larger schools.

Students will also become mentors, leading activities and sharing discoveries with a neighbouring remote school and the wider community during our Harvest Festival celebrations.

This National Science Week event will inspire curiosity, creativity, leadership, and environmental awareness while showing students that science can be explored anywhere — even in their own backyard.
