Growing Native Knowledge Through Hydroponics at Guildford Grammar School

  • Guildford Grammar School
Guildford Grammar School, Guildford, WA 6055, Australia

For National Science Week 2026, students from Years 1 to 6 at Guildford Grammar Preparatory School will take part in an exciting, hands‑on science project about plants, water, and looking after our environment.

Students will work together to design, build, and look after a hydroponic growing system. We will be growing local native plants, starting with native grasses, with the intention of rehabilitating our school’s water catchment areas.

By doing this project, students will learn:

  • how plants grow and how ecosystems work
  • how food and plants can be grown in sustainable ways
  • how water and nutrients move through a system
  • why it is important to care for the environment

Students won’t just be learning, they’ll be real scientists and engineers, solving problems, testing ideas, and working as a team. The hydroponic system will stay at our school after Science Week so students can continue to learn about sustainable growing practices.

In the long term, this project will help us:

  • understand native plants and local ecosystems
  • think about how damaged areas of our school could be restored
  • learn from Indigenous knowledge about caring for the land
  • build strong skills in science, engineering, and sustainability

This project shows how science can help us learn, work together, and make a positive difference for the future.

Additional activities will include Year 5 students will sharing chemistry experiment demonstrations for other year levels, showing cool reactions and explaining the science behind them. Year 6 students will present their natural disaster support designs, sharing how science and engineering can help people during emergencies.
