Emu Heights Public School, Emu Heights, NSW 2750, Australia

Over the course of a week, students will use finger pulse monitors to investigate how physical activity affects heart rate and overall fitness. At the beginning of the week, students will record their resting heart rate and make predictions about how exercise will impact their body. Each day, they will participate in different physical activities (e.g. walking, jogging, interval training) and measure their heart rate before, during, and after exercise. Students will collect and record their data, then use mathematical skills to graph and compare results over time. They will analyse patterns, calculate averages, and identify how quickly their heart rate returns to resting levels as an indicator of fitness. In science lessons, students will connect their findings to their understanding of the circulatory system, exploring how the heart, lungs, and blood work together to deliver oxygen around the body. They will discuss why heart rate increases during exercise and how regular activity can improve cardiovascular health. This hands-on investigation integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by combining real-world data collection, analysis, and scientific understanding, while promoting student engagement through personalised learning.
