  • - (AWST)
  • East Kimberley College
East Kimberley College, Kununurra, WA 6743, Australia

As part of Science Week, primary and secondary students will work to design and establish a native edible garden featuring local East Kimberley plants. Students will investigate the scientific, cultural and environmental importance of native species, including edible bush foods traditionally used by Miriwoong people. The project will introduce students to plants suited to the local environment and explore how these plants have been sustainably used for food, medicine and resources for thousands of years.

Students will participate in hands-on activities including researching plant needs, preparing garden beds, testing soil and planting seeds. Primary students will focus on identifying plants, basic gardening skills and understanding how living things depend on their environment, while secondary students will explore ecological relationships, sustainability and plant adaptations.

The project aims to build student understanding of biodiversity, sustainable practices and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems. Through authentic engagement with native plants and local perspectives, students will develop a stronger connection to Country and an appreciation of how traditional ecological knowledge continues to inform sustainable environmental practices today.
