Students will experience a unique learning journey to Quoin Island as part of CQUniversity’s award-winning Buraligim Weiber (Place of Learning) program. Meaning “Place of Learning” in the Gooreng Gooreng language, Buraligim Weiber connects young people with Country, culture, science and sustainability through immersive, real-world learning experiences.
During this hands-on excursion, students will explore Quoin Island’s coastal environment through a series of interactive rotations focused on marine conservation and environmental stewardship. Activities include a beach clean-up investigation, a turtle education session with experts from the Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, marine debris sorting and analysis with Tangaroa Blue, and a turtle tracks exploration that examines the life cycles and habitats of marine turtles.
The experience encourages students to become environmental scientists for the day, collecting data, investigating human impacts on marine ecosystems, and exploring practical actions that can help protect local coastal environments. Through direct engagement with community organisations, researchers and environmental educators, students gain a deeper understanding of sustainability, conservation and the interconnected relationship between people, culture and the natural world.
Buraligim Weiber has engaged hundreds of Gladstone Region students since 2021 and is recognised for its innovative approach to combining STEM learning, cultural knowledge and place-based education. The program connects students with local environments and communities while building curiosity, confidence and a sense of responsibility for caring for Country and Sea Country.
This excursion provides an unforgettable opportunity for students to learn beyond the classroom, develop environmental awareness, and experience how science, culture and community can work together to create positive change.
