Join the National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Trip for a public talk from Dr Jeremy Bourhill.

Did you know a huge part of the Universe is missing? For our Universe to look the way it does, for it to even exist in the first place, requires that we add in some extra ingredients other than the regular matter that makes up me, you, and everything we interact with. One of these ingredients is something called Dark Matter, a mysterious, invisible substance that should be spread throughout the Universe - and researchers around the world are actively searching for it. Since 2020, an Australian wide collaboration of researchers has been striving towards this goal under the banner of the Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics. Hear what they’ve been up to, how the search is progressing, and what a discovery might mean for you and our understanding of the world around us!

Dr Jeremy Bourhill is a physicist at the University of Western Australia and a member of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics, where he designs quantum sensors to hunt for dark matter. His research has earned him invitations to speak at academic conferences across Europe, Asia and Australia as well as taking an unexpected detour into the real world: a device he invented to search for ultralight dark matter is now patented technology being developed to make safer pharmaceuticals. Jeremy has shared his love of physics in schools and pubs across the country with the National Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip, and will be familiar to ABC Radio Perth listeners, where he appears on the Saturday Breakfast program with Amber Cunningham. He is living proof that staring at the biggest mystery in the cosmos can change life down here on Earth.
