Tune in to AI Uncovered this National Science Week.

What is AI really doing behind the scenes? Can we trust the answers it gives us? And could AI ever have feelings?

What’s Up with AI? AI Uncovered is a special National Science Week podcast episode created for students and teachers, where young people from across Australia put their biggest questions about artificial intelligence to leading AI researchers.

In this special episode:

  • Discover how AI actually works – and what’s really happening behind the technology
  • Find out how generative AI creates images
  • Explore whether students should use AI at school and how it can support learning without replacing creativity and critical thinking
  • Learn how to fact-check AI answers and spot the signs of AI-generated images
  • Hear what AI means for copyright, ethics, the environment and the future of work
  • Ask whether AI can really feel emotions

Hosted by Kathy Nickels, with high school student April as co-host, the episode features Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society and Professor Tama Leaver from the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child.

What’s Up with AI? AI Uncovered is a collaboration between the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society and the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, created as part of National Science Week 2026.
