Healthy rivers and catchments are the lifeblood of Far North Queensland, shaping our environment, communities, culture and economy. Join the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) for an inspiring and interactive event exploring how science helps us understand, care for and protect the waterways that connect our mountains, rainforests, rivers, wetlands and the Great Barrier Reef.

A special highlight of the day is the panel session "Traditional Science in the Tropics: Understanding Country Through First Nations Science" (12:00-12:20 pm), featuring First Nations Knowledge Holders sharing insights into caring for Country through generations of observation, experience and deep connection to place. Their knowledge will be presented alongside leading environmental scientists and researchers, creating a unique opportunity to discover how different scientific traditions contribute to understanding and managing our waterways and landscapes.

Throughout the event, visitors can explore interactive displays, meet scientists, community groups and environmental organisations, and learn how monitoring, conservation and citizen science are helping protect the natural systems that support life in the tropics. Discover how rivers function within larger catchments, explore the connections between healthy waterways and a healthy Reef, and gain a deeper understanding of how human activities influence ecosystem health.

Families, students, community members and curious minds of all ages are invited to get hands-on with engaging activities, hear real-world stories from the field, and learn about exciting pathways into STEM, environmental careers, volunteering and community action.
