Over the past four years, our school has been developing a plan to establish a native habitat garden around our new gymnasium, in consultation with our KESO officer and local council to ensure appropriate plant selection for our environment.
In the lead up to National Science Week, students will participate in STEM sessions exploring native plants, biodiversity and the role of vegetation in supporting local ecosystems. They will examine how plant selection supports sustainability and environmental resilience.
During National Science Week, students will engage in hands-on STEM sessions to plant native species and establish the garden. They will apply practical skills such as safe tool use, correct planting techniques and understanding plant needs.
Following the event, students will observe and document plant growth and changes in the environment over time, using simple observations and recordings.
This project provides authentic, place-based science learning and contributes to the development of a sustainable outdoor learning space that will support ongoing STEM learning across the school.
