Pender's Grove Primary School, Thornbury, VIC 3071, Australia

Curious Chemists is a whole-school science fair held during National Science Week (15–23 August), involving all students from Foundation (Prep) to Year 6. Focused on the Chemical Sciences strand of the Victorian Curriculum F–10 (Version 2.0), the fair celebrates student learning through hands-on experimentation, peer teaching, and community engagement.

In the term leading up to the fair, students will progress through structured, curriculum-aligned learning objectives centred on chemical reactions and how matter behaves and changes in the world around us. Using a 'See it, Do it, Teach it' model, students move from guided observation to independent experimentation, building genuine conceptual understanding and science inquiry skills.

At the fair, a 1.5 to 2-hour afternoon showcase, students set up experiment stations and take on the role of science communicators, explaining and demonstrating their chemical reactions to peers, parents, and visiting teachers. Foundation students are supported by Year 6 buddies, strengthening cross-year mentorship. Experiments are age-appropriate and mapped to curriculum achievement standards across all primary year levels.

The fair aims to spark curiosity, develop science identity, and foster a shared sense of wonder about how the world works — bringing students, families, and the school community together through science.
