We will be engaging students in a week-long, inquiry-based exploration of how scientific ideas grow from curiosity to real-world application, with a focus on community engagement. Students will investigate seed germination, plant growth, and sustainable food systems through hands-on experiences tailored to stage: early years students will observe and document seed growth; Years 4–6 will conduct simple controlled experiments comparing variables such as light, water, and soil; and Years 7–9 will design and test small-scale growing systems (e.g. using recycled containers to compare soil-based and water-based plant growth). With funding provided, we will set up a central 'Seeds of Science Pop-Up Lab' to invite classes and families to engage with interactive stations, including seed identification and investigation challenges, simple hydroponic setups, and 'ask a question' boards to spark inquiry such as 'How can we grow food in different environments?'. In partnership with Compassion (our school charity), students will explore food security in developing contexts and consider how simple, low-cost growing solutions could support communities. The week will culminate in a showcase where students present findings and share practical, evidence-based ideas with peers and families.
