Our project “Caterpillar to Butterfly: Exploring Life Cycles Through Observation” will give our Kindergarteners the hands-on experience to observe the complete lifecycle of a butterfly. The Children will witness the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly, fostering curiosity and early scientific thinking.

Students will help set up enclosures with 6 healthy caterpillars and plant cuttings and observe the process of metamorphosis over the coming weeks.

Through this project, the children will learn about why caterpillars and other species are important, and be encouraged to make observations, predictions about what will happen next, ask questions and solve problems.

The entire metamorphosis takes 4-6 weeks. During National Science Week we will aim to set up the enclosures, announce the caterpillar’s arrival to families and set up signage in the foyer about our support and love of National Science week (timing can be dependent from season to season). Every morning families and younger siblings will be encouraged to enter classrooms and observe the caterpillars. At the end of the project, the butterflies will be released into our beautiful kindy gardens.

This project aligns with the themes of science week and introduces STEM learning in a way that is age-appropriate, engaging, exciting and fun, which we believe will help fuel our children’s interest in STEM into the future.
