Seeds, Streams & Science – The Trent Creek Living Lab invites students to explore how ecosystems work and how science grows from curiosity and inquiry, using Trentham’s local waterway (Trent Creek) as a hands-on learning environment.
Students in Years 3–6 will take part in a full-day field experience with teachers, families and local Landcare volunteers. Through activities such as water testing, soil investigations and biodiversity surveys, students will explore the connected systems that support life in and around Trent Creek.
Aligned with the Seeds of Science theme, students will investigate both literal seeds and the “seeds” of knowledge - forming questions, testing ideas and observing how ecosystems grow and change over time. A key component includes collecting, growing and planting native grasses from locally collected seed, contributing directly to creek restoration.
The program will also weave in First Nations knowledge, highlighting the cultural importance of waterways and caring for Country.
Students will record their findings in journals and visual displays and share their learning with the school community at assembly.
This project builds scientific understanding through real-world exploration and connects students to their local environment as both learners and caretakers.
