At Amaroo School, Year 7 AMcares (pastoral care) classes will plant and investigate the growth of fruit trees within the school grounds, creating a shared, long-term STEM learning experience. As students observe changes in their trees over time, they will explore how environmental conditions influence growth, connecting scientific concepts to real-world ecosystems. During National Science Week and beyond, students will conduct structured investigations, including measuring tree height, monitoring soil moisture, pH and quality, and recording biodiversity. They will organise and analyse their data using tables and graphs to identify patterns and draw evidence-based conclusions. This initiative establishes a longitudinal dataset that will be built upon from Year 7 to Year 10, allowing students to revisit and refine their understanding over time. The project aligns with the Year 7 Australian Curriculum ecology unit, supporting learning about ecosystems and environmental interactions. Funding is sought to purchase fruit trees (and fertiliser) for 13 Year 7 AMcares classes from Bunnings that are suited to the climate in the ACT.
