Imagine a bright future with science.

The Space Faring Civilisation (SFC) Film Festival is back for 2026. We are a Canberra-grown festival that loves telling stories about science and space. We show films that give us hope for the future and show how science and imagination can help us build a better world.

Free Workshops at Science in the Centres. Before our big cinema day, look for us in major shopping centres in Canberra! We will be running free, hands-on workshops where you can try out science filmmaking and get excited about National Science Week.

The Main Event. Join us on Sunday 23 August at Dendy Cinemas for a full day of fun and discovery. Here is what you can look forward to:

  • Morning Creative Workshop: Roll up your sleeves and learn how to use your imagination to explain big scientific ideas.

  • Film Screenings: Watch a collection of short films, including cool space adventures, true stories about science, and amazing animations from around the world.

  • Inspiring Keynote Speaker: Meet a professional science storyteller/communicator who will show us how to share the wonders of science with the world.

  • Q&A Panel: After the films, you can chat with our guest speaker and the filmmakers to ask questions and learn their secrets.

  • Festival Awards: We will celebrate our winning films and cheer for the creativity of every filmmaker whose work was shown on the big screen.

  • Meet and Greet: After the awards, join us for a casual get-together! It is a great chance to talk to other science fans and creative people, share your own ideas, and celebrate a big day of storytelling.

Whether you want to be an astronaut, a filmmaker, or you just love a good story, come along and see what the future holds!
