This project will engage primary students in an authentic, hands-on exploration of sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship through the science of seeds and ecosystems. Inspired by global initiatives such as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, students will investigate the importance of seed preservation and its role in protecting plant diversity for future generations. They will apply this understanding through a series of practical activities, including creating seed bombs using native species, producing recycled paper embedded with seeds, and planting vegetation to support local habitats. A key focus of the project is supporting native wildlife, particularly the endangered Carnaby’s black cockatoo, by increasing the availability of suitable food sources and habitat within the school environment. Students will research local ecosystems, identify appropriate native plants, and contribute to the creation of a school-based habitat space. Where possible, students will also design and construct bird nesting boxes, further strengthening connections between scientific learning and real-world conservation. Aligned with the Science Week theme and the Australian Curriculum, this project integrates Biological and Earth and Space Sciences with inquiry-based learning approaches. Students will develop skills in observation, prediction, and problem-solving while fostering a sense of responsibility for their local environment. “Sowing Science” empowers students to see themselves as active contributors to a more sustainable future, demonstrating that small actions—like planting a seed—can have a lasting ecological impact.
