Can a garden help solve the problems of the future?
During National Science Week, our school community will explore this exciting question through our whole-school event, Growing Together: Science in Motion – Garden Science Expo.
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will become scientists, engineers, designers and communicators as they investigate how plants, gardens and sustainable growing practices can help people and the environment. Through hands-on experiments, students will explore seed germination, plant growth, pollinators, composting, water conservation and sustainable food production.
Each year level will conduct age-appropriate scientific investigations, collect data and share their findings with others. Students will create displays, models and interactive exhibits that showcase their learning and encourage curiosity about the natural world.
What makes our event unique is the integration of Science, Physical Education, Auslan and Art. Students will participate in Garden Olympics-style challenges that explore scientific concepts through movement, teamwork and problem-solving. Throughout the week, students will also learn and use AUSLAN signs connected to science and nature, promoting inclusive communication and accessibility.
The week will culminate in a community Garden Science Expo where families, staff and community members are invited to tour student exhibits, participate in hands-on activities and discover how science can help create a more sustainable future.
Our event aims to inspire curiosity, creativity and critical thinking while demonstrating that science is everywhere—in our gardens, our communities and our everyday lives. By connecting scientific inquiry with movement, communication and sustainability, students will develop a deeper understanding of the world around them and the role they can play in shaping a better future.
