Our Year 7 students at Pine Rivers Special School will design and create a sensory garden in an unused grassed area as part of National Science Week 2026: Seeds of Science. This hands-on project will immerse students in exploring plant growth, water systems, and sustainability through multi-sensory experiences. Students will participate in planting, watering, and maintaining a variety of sensory plants (textured, scented, edible), while investigating how water moves through soil and ecosystems. They will engage in simple experiments such as soil filtration, water absorption, and plant growth comparisons. The garden will include accessible pathways, sensory stations, and interactive elements to support students working at highly individualised and early access levels. Students will document their observations using photos, symbols, and simple data recording methods. This project will foster curiosity, independence, and engagement in science through real-world learning, while creating a lasting, inclusive outdoor learning space that can be used across multiple curriculum areas beyond Science Week.
