Guided Platypus Walk at the Tidbinbilla Sanctuary

  • - (AEST)
  • Tidbinbilla Sanctuary
Ribbon Gum Carpark, Tidbinbilla Reserve Road, Paddys River, Paddys River, ACT 2620, Australia

Join Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch for a guided platypus walk at Tidbinbilla Sanctuary. This special place in the hills near Canberra is home to wetlands, waterways, and a wide range of native wildlife, including the shy and unique platypus.

At the start of the walk, our friendly Waterwatch guides will share simple information about the Sanctuary, our waterways, and why healthy waterways are so important. You will learn about the plants and animals that live here and how they are all connected.

We will then take an easy walk along the flat pathways and boardwalks that wind through the wetlands. These paths are suitable for most people and allow us to move slowly and quietly through platypus habitat.

Along the way, we will stop at good viewing spots and watch the water for movement. Our guides will show you what to look for, such as ripples, bubbles, or a small bill at the surface. You will learn about how platypus behave, when they are most active, and what they need to survive.

We may also see other wildlife such as waterbirds, turtles, or kangaroos, as the Sanctuary supports many native species.

While we cannot promise a platypus sighting, Tidbinbilla is one of the best places in the region to look for them. Taking time to slow down, listen, and enjoy being by the water is a special experience on its own.

This walk is calm, relaxed, and suitable for families. It is a great way to connect with nature and learn how we can all help care for our waterways and wildlife.

Come along and be part of a community caring for our catchment.
