The Science Behind Saving Lives at Sea

  • From
  • Marine Rescue Port Macquarie Boat Shed
11a Buller St, Port Macquarie NSW 2444, Australia

Ever wondered how people are rescued at sea—or how science helps save lives?

Come find out at Marine Rescue: The Science Behind Saving Lives at Sea! Over two action-packed Saturdays, join us at the Marine Rescue Port Macquarie Boatshed for a fun, free, and family-friendly science open day.

In five engaging talks, you’ll hear from experts in marine science and search and rescue as they demonstrate survival gear like flares and firefighting devices, explore the technology that helps rescuers find people fast, and share what it’s really like to be a woman working in the marine industry.

Beyond the talks, step aboard real rescue boats, meet the Rescue Vessel Crew, and get hands-on with equipment used in real emergencies. Try knot tying, rescue ring throwing, or "rescue" a model whale from entangled fishing gear!

With fun competitions, science activities, and hands-on learning, this is a great day out for all ages. Whether you love boats, care about the ocean, or just enjoy cool science—there’s something here for you!
