STEM Sparks: Igniting girls’ futures in the built environment

Ever wondered who decides what gets built where? How does someone know how much concrete to order for a new footpath?

Welcome to STEM Sparks — a hands-on, curiosity-fuelled event where you can explore real jobs in construction and the built environment.

Meet women who work as design managers, project managers, quantity surveyors, building surveyors, and engineers. They plan big projects, small projects, solve tricky problems, and keep everything running smoothly — from skyscrapers to solar farms.

Try it for yourself at our activity stations:

  • Sequence a project like a Project Manager
  • Estimate materials like a Quantity Surveyor
  • Spot building fails like a Building Surveyor
  • Crack cost mysteries like a Contract Administrator

Join a STEM Story Circle — chat with amazing women in the industry about what they do and how they got there. Ask your own questions or pick a fun prompt card like “What did you like doing as a kid?” or “What do you wear to work?”

Take the Mythbusters Challenge: Can you guess which STEM career myths are true and which ones are totally off? (Hint: Yes, there are women in construction!)

Complete the Sparks Scavenger Hunt across campus activities to earn a reward pack — including a free book to take home!

Whether you like building things, solving puzzles, organising chaos, or dreaming big — there's a future for you in STEM.
