All through National Science Week during recess and lunch breaks the whole school will be involved in science inquiry based activities themed by the letters of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). This will complement our science education lessons looking at this year's theme of 'Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language' in a range of hands-on investigations and activities.
The activities are:
Monday- Science 'Bubble Mania': Students will attempt to make the biggest bubbles with different wands and solutions.
Tuesday- Technology 'Remote Control': Students have the opportunity to try out different robots and augmented reality devices.
Wednesday- Engineering 'Ramps and Slingshots': Students will use a range of materials to build the highest hot wheels ramps and shoot the furthest slingshot at our giant 'Periodic Table’.
Thursday- Art 'Murals and Mayhem': Students will be collaborating on an indigenous mural and interactive art installation based on the science theme.
Friday- Mathematics ‘Robot Peace Competition Winners': During science classes the school community votes on our ‘Robot Peace' competition where students make a robot and poster explaining how it helps us and the winners are presented with a Scitech membership at the whole school Science Week assembly.
Students will be able to engage with professionals outside the school community with experience in robotics and augmented reality. Each activity is designed to provide hands on and engaging ways to utilise Science inquiry skills of questioning, predicting, fair testing, evaluating and communicating their learning. The STEAM Breaks are opportunities to experiment in ways that do not normally occur in the classroom. Connections to our local high schools and their science specialists will further bridge network collaboration across schools and between primary and high school.
