Soil Science Spectacular

  • - (ACST)
  • Westside Community Garden
56 Milner Road (along fence line CMS & Jim McConville Oval), Gillen NT 0870, Australia

The "Soil Science Spectacular" will engage the Central Australian Primary Schools in hands on innovative day science festival exploring the hidden ecosystems beneath our feet and how it relates to gut biome and health. Through collaboration between ALEC, Alice Springs Community Gardens, local schools, and keynote presenter Costa Georgiadis (ABC Gardening Australia), the event will transform soil science into interactive learning experiences for all ages.

The festival features hands-on workshops including microscopic soil ecosystem   exploration, composting biology demonstrations, pH testing, soil profile analysis, and food nutrition and health. Students will participate in structured activities connecting soil science to a range of STEM principles.

Indigenous plant and plant medicine knowledge will be highlighted through dedicated sessions led by First Nations elders and other experts, connecting traditional knowledge with contemporary science.

Workshops will be complemented by scientific demonstrations, expert panels, and interactive displays. The festival structure allows both targeted school participation and general public engagement, with activities designed to build scientific literacy around how healthy soils contribute to sustainable food systems and environmental resilience.
