Online Seminar - Investigating the Algal Bloom in South Australian Waters

  • - (ACST)

This online seminar, hosted by Associate Professor Jochen Kaempf at Flinders University,  explains the science behind the algal bloom in South Australian waters.

The seminar comprises three lessons that, together, are key to understanding the causes and spreading of the Karenia mikimotoi bloom.

  • The first lesson describes the oceanography and flushing of SA gulfs featuring both their slow density-driven overturning circulation and the strong tidal stirring across Backstairs Passage.
  • The second lesson focuses on factors affecting the growth of K. mikimotoi addressing the myths that the Murray River flood in 2023, strong upwelling in 2024, and/or the marine heatwave of 2025 have caused this algal bloom.
  • The third lesson discusses model predictions of K. Mikimotoi distributions for the upcoming summer 2025/2026, which are deeply concerning...

This event will be live-streamed on Friday 15 August 2025, 12:00-13:00 pm ACST (Adelaide).
