Science Week at the Broome Bird Observatory

  • From
  • Broome Bird Observatory

We are looking forward to hosting some exciting activities and workshops that showcase the shorebird capital of Australia as we explore the diversity of Roebuck Bay for national science week with community members and travellers.

We kick things off on Friday night with a short session on how to get involved in citizen science and an easy to follow shorebird ID talk. Then following the science week theme of ‘decoding the universe’ we will run a star gazing session, which is not to be missed! Using a telescope you will be guided through the stars and space via stories and scope viewing, suitable for all ages

On Saturday we will be learning all things mudflats and their importance to the migratory shorebirds and how they changed over the 10m tidal range. Here you will learn how to take mud samples and just the scientists in Roebuck Bay we will use microscopes to see the invertebrates, echinoderms, polycheates and other benthic critters the shore birds are feeding on. Then we will use scopes and binoculars to check out the shorebirds as the tide pushes them off their feeding grounds and closer into the bay. We will finish the day morning off with a BBQ. It is sure to be a hoot!

We have camping sites available on the Friday night so that you can enjoy both days of science week activities.
