National Science Week 2025 Travelling Launch – Winton Queensland

  • - (AEST)
  • Waltzing Matilda Centre
50 Elderslie Street, Winton QLD 4735, Australia

Join us in Winton for the next stop of our travelling launch of National Science Week 2025, celebrating the exciting world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the poetic 'dinosaur and dark sky' heart of Central Queensland.

We’ll gather at the Waltzing Matilda Centre, the world’s first museum dedicated to a song. Rebuilt after a fire in 2015, the Centre now features exhibitions on the song’s history, the Great Shearers’ Strike, the birth of Qantas, and the region’s deep connections to opal mining, Aboriginal heritage, and palaeontology.

Winton is where “Waltzing Matilda” was first performed, Qantas was conceived, and dinosaur fossils continue to reshape our understanding of life on Earth. It’s a perfect place to spark curiosity and celebrate STEM.

Speakers:

  • Cr Cathy White, Mayor of Winton Shire Council, will reflect on the region’s leadership in science, sustainability, and community engagement.
  • Liza Cameron, Manager of CUC RAPAD CWQ, will share how regional study hubs are transforming access to higher education across Central West Queensland, empowering students to pursue STEM careers without leaving their communities.
  • Dr Christina Zdenek (UQ, UniSQ), ecologist and snake expert, will reveal how science helps us understand and protect Australia’s wildlife.
  • David Corporal (Boeing, QUT), Eastern Arrernte man and mechanical engineer, will discuss engineering, space, his NASA internship, and his 25-year plan to become an astronaut.
  • Luis Villegas-Aguilar (GU), quantum physicist, will explore quantum networks and how entangled particles can revolutionise secure communication.
  • Dr Anita K Milroy (UQ), Inspiring Australia QLD Manager, will reflect on science engagement and her research in fossils, synchrotron radiation, and ArtSci.

This free, family-friendly event includes breakfast mini muffins. Drinks on sale. Whether you're a science lover or just curious, come celebrate how STEM shapes our world.
