More Than Four Seasons

  • - (AEST)
  • Kyneton Community House Children's Hub
5 Hutton Street, Kyneton VIC 3444, Australia

Throughout the week, the children will be engaging in a variety of hands-on and exploratory learning experiences designed to spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Using science inquiry processes—such as observing, predicting, questioning, and discussing—we will explore the changes we see and feel in the natural environment as the seasons shift.

Our learning will include:

  • Daily weather observations and charting: temperature, wind, rain, and sunshine.

  • Creative art projects inspired by the colours, animals, and natural elements we associate with each season.

  • Discussions and storytelling about how different animals and plants respond to seasonal change.

  • Science experiments that demonstrate how the weather affects our environment—like exploring evaporation, cloud formation, and wind movement.

Importantly, our Science Week will also highlight and respect Indigenous perspectives on seasons. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long understood that Australia’s climate doesn't always fit neatly into the four European seasons. Instead, many Indigenous communities observe multiple seasons that are based on detailed knowledge of local weather patterns, animal behaviours, and plant cycles.

By weaving together Western science and Indigenous knowledge systems, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation for the environment, promote respect for Aboriginal culture and perspectives, and encourage children to ask thoughtful questions about how the world works.

We look forward to a week of discovery, conversation, and connection as we explore the science of seasons and weather together.
