To celebrate National Science Week, our preschool students will embark on an exciting STEM adventure through Build-a-Spaceship—a collaborative project where the entire class will design and construct one large, imaginative spaceship together. Using recycled materials, cardboard, and craft supplies, children will work as a team to plan, build, and decorate their spacecraft, developing foundational skills in engineering, design, and cooperative problem-solving.
Throughout the project, students will engage in rich discussions about space, planets, gravity, and the role of astronauts, supported by picture books, songs, and short videos. As the spaceship takes shape, students will have opportunities to role-play as astronauts, complete with costumes and space missions, turning the classroom into a dynamic space station for imaginative exploration.
This immersive experience aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework by promoting inquiry, creativity, communication, and a sense of belonging. The project will conclude with a special “Launch Day,” where families are invited to see the final spaceship and enjoy a student-led space mission performance.
Funding will be used to support construction materials, astronaut costumes, display elements, and interactive learning resources. Build-a-Spaceship promises to be a joyful, inspiring way to celebrate science with our youngest learners.
