Make Your Own Earthquake – From Lasers to Drones

  • - (AEST)
  • Flexible Learning Space (Room 208–2011), Level 2, McCoy Building, The University of Melbourne
253-283 Elgin Street, Carlton VIC 3053, Australia
Ever made an earthquake? Now’s your chance!
Jump, move, and play with science activities that show you how earthquakes work.

Full demonstrations start at 45 minutes past the hour:
10:45 AM, 11:45 AM, 12:45 PM, 1:45 PM, 2:45 PM

-----------------------------------

See your own earthquake waves:
Jump on the spot and watch your jump turn into real earthquake waves on a screen. Scientists use these waves to learn when and where earthquakes happen.

Rock-scanning:
Grab an iPad and use its laser to scan a rock or anything nearby. The laser helps you see tiny details, just like how scientists study the ground movement after an earthquake.

Explore drones & GPS tools:
Check out real drones and GPS station that help scientists make detailed maps of the Earth. See 3D images made from drone flights and learn how the ground changes after an earthquake.

Shake the city:
Try shaking a wooden model of buildings and see how short and tall buildings move differently in each type of earthquakes.

Meet real earthquake scientists:
Talk with real earthquake scientists and hear fun stories about their adventures studying earthquakes around the world.

This is your chance to use real tools and technology that scientists use to study earthquakes. Whether you’re 8 or 80, you’ll learn how our planet shakes and moves — and maybe even want to be an earthquake scientist one day!
