One of the Big Ideas for my science classes this year is "Curiosity" which fits well with the Science Week theme ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language’.
We discuss "observation" as a scientist's most important activity on a regular basis. Before science week I plan on providing a digital microscope and laptop to each class for a week. During that week they can take photos of items as seen under the microscope. The class will choose their favourite 2 photos (secretly provided to myself) and I will print and frame them. During science week we will have a “Guess the picture” competition.
The students are fascinated by the microscopic world and this competition will generate increased engagement, resulting in strong student learning outcomes especially in biological and material sciences.
The preparation leading up to the competition will contribute to ongoing and increased student participation and engagement in school STEM programs as they search the school for items, both natural and manufactured, to place under the microscope.
Families will be invited to view and participate in the competition during science week.
